Nurturing New Voices in Theater for Over 30 Years

What We Do

Chicago Writers’ Bloc is a playwright development 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization based in Chicago. For more than three decades, we’ve focused on supporting the creation of new theatrical works by offering playwrights a space to share, refine, and develop their plays.

We host monthly sessions via Zoom where members workshop their scripts, share feedback, and engage in artistic dialogue. Our work culminates in public festivals, including annual short play events and semi-annual staged readings of new full-length works.

We are not a producing theater, but rather a creative incubator—a collaborative space for writers, directors, and performers to help bring bold new works to life. Since our founding, we’ve helped develop over 100 new plays, many of which have gone on to full productions in Chicago and beyond.

Our members include both emerging and experienced playwrights who are committed to the craft and to building a supportive artistic community.

If you are passionate about storytelling and theater-making, we welcome you to learn more about how to join our vibrant community.
